This is where the square format really grabs me. It becomes the integral component of the painting. Now, what I paint can really be seen, the shapes and rhythm of the piece begins. This size has always been a favorite of mine and I usually reach for this size first when starting to paint after a layoff.
I’ve been known to go directly to a 4 foot enlargement from a 12” panel. Finding the basic structure in the 12” square is all I need to begin the dance with paint and brush. This size gives me enough room to express the concept without getting bogged down in details. Complete in themselves.
